Playgrounds at Naranja Park in Oro Valley will temporarily shut down starting the week of Tuesday, Nov. 3, as crews begin installing shade sails over the equipment.

The Town of Oro Valley announced the project on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Six large canopies will cover playground equipment at both the North and South Playgrounds. A single canopy will also go up near the pickleball court and skate park.

The shade sails will be made from UV-resistant fabric, according to the town.

Metal fencing will surround the playgrounds while work is underway. Crews plan to tackle the playground areas first, with the hope of finishing that portion in time for winter break so the playgrounds can reopen.

The pickleball courts and skate park will stay open during construction. Soft barrier fencing will mark those work areas, but access is not expected to be affected, the town said.

Overall construction is expected to wrap up by Dec. 31.

The project had been in the works since at least September. The town's September 2026 executive report to the Town Council noted that the contractor was nearing completion of engineered drawings, which still needed permitting approval before fabrication could begin.
