Tucson police arrested 29 people and impounded 18 vehicles after a months-long investigation into street takeovers, the department announced Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The Tucson Police Department's (TPD) Threat Mitigation Unit led the effort, which targeted groups that block intersections for racing, burnouts and other stunts, first reported by KVOA. The investigation produced 20 misdemeanor arrests and nine felony arrests. Officers also recovered three stolen vehicles.

Street takeovers have been reported at major intersections throughout the Tucson area, TPD said.

Tips from community members helped officers identify the people and vehicles involved.

TPD said it will continue working with partner agencies to address criminal activity tied to street takeovers. Residents who witness street racing or takeover activity can call 911 or submit an anonymous tip through 88-CRIME.
